LEE PATERSON'S consistent form back at home-town club York City Knights this season has earned the veteran loose-forward a recall for Scotland at the age of 33.

Paterson was today named in the train-on squad of 26 for the Scots' upcoming European Championships campaign, two years after he last donned the Saltire jersey.

Also included is up-and-coming Hull KR winger Jack Stewart, a product of Heworth ARLC's junior system. The teenager played for Scotland U19s in their successful Commonwealth Championship campaign in June but is yet to make his full international bow.

Former New Earswick All Blacks junior Paterson - whose career has taken in stints at Keighley, York, Rochdale, Batley, Widnes, Carpentras in France, Mackay Cutters in Australia, and Whitehaven, before his return to Huntington Stadium 12 months ago - will be hoping to add to his 11 caps.

He was in Scotland's 2008 World Cup party but missed out on the 2013 tournament, despite earning plaudits as an ever-present for Haven that year as they consolidated in the Championship after promotion.

Twelve players remain from the Scots' World Cup squad that upset the odds to reach the quarter-finals last autumn, including captain Danny Brough, Huddersfield's former Knights half-back.

A second current Knights player, former Widnes and Featherstone prop Iain Morrison, 31, is also named in the 26 after five years in the international wilderness - despite making only five appearances for York in an injury-hit year, the last of which was back in June. Morrison was Scottish Player of the Year back in 2008.

Boss Steve McCormack, who is also the Gloucestershire All Golds chief, will trim the 26 to 20 ahead of the opening game against Wales at Workington on Friday, October 17.

"I’m delighted with this Scotland squad,” said McCormack, ten years into the job as head coach. “As always, we’ve been able to name an outstanding group of senior players, along with a number of exciting youngsters who are now involved in the Scotland Rugby League pathway.

“It’s important to build on last year’s fantastic World Cup and look to improve all aspects of performance, both on and off the field."

After the Wales match, Scotland face Ireland in Dublin on October 25 and France at Galashiels on October 31.
