CITY GROUND, who broke new ground for Mick Easterby a couple of weeks ago by providing the veteran North Yorkshire trainer with his first-ever winner in Jersey, has a shorter journey to travel today as he bids to follow up.

The Sheriff Hutton gelding has clocked-up plenty of miles lately. Prior to winning at Les Landes, Jersey's popular Bank Holiday venue, City Ground had won at Brighton.

On both occasions he was ridden by amateur rider Serena Brotherton.

This afternoon he has the professional assistance of Barry McHugh as he aims to complete a hat-trick in the Chris Walker's 60th Year Racing Here Handicap over an extended mile. A previous winner on this course, City Ground should be hard to beat.

Andrea Atzeni, who is very much a hot jockey at the moment makes his first visit of the season to Beverley for the course's final meeting of the year.

Atzeni, who won the St Leger on Kingston Hill at Doncaster earlier this month, and who has also gained prestigious Group-race wins lately on Cursory Glance at the Curragh and on Postponed at York, has been snapped-up to ride as number one jockey to Quatar Racing next year.

He has a 33 per cent strike-rate at Beverley in the last five years and has every chance of adding to that impressive statistic this afternoon.

Atzeni can win the featured Eddie And Violet Smith Conditions Stakes on Green Door, trained by Olly Stevens.

Winner of the Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster last year, Green Door has found life tough this season as a three-year-old in sprinting company. But this looks a good opportunity for him after runner-up efforts at Leicester on his last two starts.

Clergyman can also oblige for Atzeni in the Thanks Four Your Support In 2014 Maiden Auction Stakes.

The Martyn Meade-trained two-year-old has been beaten less than a length in each of his last two starts at Bath and Pontefract. He is well drawn as he bids to open his winning account.

Atzeni also has strong claims on the promising Natural Nine in the opening Irish Stallion Farms Maiden Stakes. He may, however, have to settle for a supporting role in this juvenile event, which is fancied to fall to Thorkhill Star, trained by Richard Fahey and the mount of David Nolan.

Runner-up at Leicester and Epsom on his latest two outings, the Malton youngster has shown a useful level of form and has also amassed plenty of experience.

In the Leconfield Search & Rescue Squadron 50th Anniversary Handicap, Tasmanian may be the one to be on after making it third-time-lucky at Newcastle earlier this month. Joe Fanning rides for Mark Johnston.

At Newcastle's twilight meeting, Les Eyre, one of North Yorkshire's most prominent trainers 20 years ago, may be the man to follow. Based this season near Beverley, after moving back to Britain after spending 11 years in Spain, Eyre has his small string in excellent heart.

It would be quite something to have three winners on the same card for a trainer with only a dozen horses under his care, but it is far from a remote possibility. Eyre saddles promising maiden Rememberance Day (3.50), recent Doncaster winner Bob (4.20) and Poolstock (5.50), who is napped to capitalise on his step up to six furlongs after a good effort over the minimum trip at Musselburgh last week.
