ROWNTREE Park are the 35th champions of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Their top pair Sam Davies and Steve Spaven again put on the style with 3-30 in an impressive away defeat of Wigginton to take the trophy with a match to spare.

It’s the first time Rowntree have won the championship since joining in 1982, and they have led the competition from start to finish.

Copmanthorpe’s 11-point defeat at York means back to level two next year, while Fulford have given themselves every chance of avoiding the drop with a narrow points win at Wetherby.

Now clinging to a precarious lead, Bubwith gave a late-season debut to Andy Gosling, who scored an unbeaten 2½-24 with Jon Clay at York 2.

Academy fetched out their big guns for the division four top-two derby, and stole the narrowest of victories for eight points at Harrogate Racquets.

However, Racquets captain Richard Shannon and youngster Bill Brown take the plaudits for a superb battling 7-5 against Academy’s star pair of Adam Ryder and Richard Bancroft.

Rob Williams’ season debut came in Bishopthorpe’s final match, winning 3-26 with James Field at Riccall to keep them safe.

Three scoring pairs helped Alne & Tollerton to edge their cruncher 57-51 at Heworth, but it’s their hosts who are favourites to avoid the drop, with Scott Marmion and David Hicks bagging a maximum.

Leaders Sutton-on-Derwent 2 set the mark in division six, with a superb ten points against promotion rivals Knaresborough 2 in their final match. Another end-of-season debut as Julian Field scored 2½-23 with Stuart Turner for Sutton.

Having buried Wigginton 3 in their own back yard, trophy favourites Appleton Roebuck 2 took a tumble at home to Wigginton 4 in a 55-53 success. Adam Houghton and Phil Anderson exacted revenge for their club with an unbeaten 2½-21.

Strensall claimed maximum points at home to four-handed Pocklington 2, but to no avail, after York 4ths snatched the last promotion place after a superb scrap at champions Copmanthorpe 2.

Rob Abbott and Mark Dadvar were imperious with 3-26, but York’s three potent pairs won five of the remaining six rubbers and drew the bonus 54-54.
