YORK City boss Nigel Worthington is ready to bring in wing reinforcements following his side’s 2-0 defeat at Burton.

The Minstermen went down to second-half goals from Lucas Akins and John Mousinho for the table-topping Brewers.

Worthington, meanwhile, replaced wide men Anthony Straker and Lindon Meikle as his team failed to build on a promising first-half display at the Pirelli Stadium.

Straker has now been substituted during the last four league games and Meikle withdrawn in back-to-back contests and, while the Bootham Crescent chief declined to comment on both players’ performances in Staffordshire, he did reveal he is ready to bolster his options on the flanks with a potential raid on the loan market.

“It’s fair to say that area is something we need to try and address,” Worthington said of his team’s wide play. “If we can get the right people in the right positions at the right price, we might have to have a look at that.”

One possibilty for Worthington ahead of tomorrow night’s home match with Luton could be to restore Michael Coulson to a role on the flanks but he remains reluctant to do that, adding: “It’s an option for us but I don’t think it would be fair because he’s doing a brilliant job for us up front.”

Worthington admitted, meanwhile, that he was “displeased” by the manner in which his side lost their first match in 24 regular SkyBet League Two fixtures and insisted that one or two of his players need to “shake themselves up a bit”.

Delivering his Pirelli Stadium verdict, the City chief said: “We didn’t pass the ball as well as we can do and we gave it away far too easily. Some of the decision making was very indifferent, so there are things we can get better at.

“I couldn’t fault the energy and effort but we surrendered the good run we have been on too easily and that displeases me the most. We didn’t do the things we are good at.

“You have to give Burton credit. They have been building over the last two or three years, but I won’t use that as an excuse, because I honestly believe we are a decent side.

“We didn’t show it though and one or two players need to shake themselves up a bit. You can’t have six, seven or eight men on their game – you need everybody at it and, when we have got that, we are a decent side.”

Worthington also called on his misfiring players to follow the example of Mousinho, following the Burton midfielder’s thunderous 30-yard strike that settled matters on 80 minutes.

“You need people to step up and hit the target like their player did for the second goal,” the ex-Northern Ireland manager pointed out.

“It’s about positive thinking and we are looking for that because, if you don’t score goals, you are putting pressure on yourselves to get your just rewards from games and we have a bit of work to do on that.”

Worthington went on to express his sympathy, however, for centre-backs Keith Lowe and John McCombe, arguing that the pair merited greater reward for their displays against the Brewers.

“I thought those two were outstanding and I felt sorry for them because they didn’t deserve to be on the wrong end of a result,” he said.
