A BIG win at four-handed Rufforth confirmed Sherburn as division five champions in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Sherburn, who have one of the smallest squads in numbers in the league, have still led from the start, failing to win the team bonus only once to finish as worthy title-grabbers.

In the battle for the division two crown, Dunnington are just nine points off the place behind with a match in hand, after winning at leaders Bubwith.

Brad Swainston and Alex McLean maxed from just 22 games won in a 57-51 victory.

Rowntree Park ripped through division one champions David Lloyd, and now need just six more points from two matches to confirm the title. Captain James Denmark notched 3-24 with Ian MacAulay.

Poppleton captain Nick Turnbull and James Silson’s 10-2 win edged a close contest for a revenge defeat of Wigginton, who remain in relegation peril.

Nick Linfoot and Paul Whurr hit the perfect 3-21 as York shoehorned ten and a half points from a 64-44 win at Fulford.

Division six leaders Sutton-on-Derwent 2 dropped vital points at New Earswick. Despite a rare appearance from Andy Crockett, Wigginton 3 couldn’t get a thing off Wheldrake’s Jason Watson and Colin Brooks who bagged 3-23. Luke Conkleton made an impressive men’s league debut with Finn van der Voort, who at 14 was just a year older for Wigginton 4 at home to Knaresborough 2. The teenagers took 1½-18.

A 9-3 win for Dunnington 2 in division seven has dented the promotion aspirations of visiting Bubwith 2.

They now fall prey to chasers Heworth 2, who have two matches to play. Dave Carver and Jack Batchelor were imperious for Dunn with 3-26. York 4 all but confirmed their promotion to division four after a comprehensive defeat of challenging Strensall. Dave’s Howarth and Duffy maxed for 24 games.
