SUMMER signing Jake Hyde is still getting accustomed to playing the Nigel Worthington way, according to the York City manager.

The 24-year-old forward, who is contracted to the Minstermen until 2017, is yet to complete 90 minutes for his new club.

He was substituted during his first four outings for Worthington and featured as a half-time replacement at Barnsley in Tuesday night's 2-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Barnsley.

Hyde has netted twice since his move from Barnet, but Wes Fletcher and Michael Coulson were preferred in attack at Oakwell and Worthington believes there is more to come from the Maidenhead-born frontman.

The City boss said: "Maybe he's still getting to grips with what we are all about at York. Everybody works for the team to make things happen.

"Jake's got to get that inside of him and it's something we continue to work on. All his times were good in pre-season so there's no problem over his fitness.

"He might just need that willingness to go and chase defenders down, run into the channels and be a bit brighter on the ball."

Worthington added that 16-year-old, York-born striker Ben Hirst, who has been used as a second-half substitute five times already this term, will continue to contribute from the bench rather than kick off a first-team fixture.

Of the 6ft first-year scholar, the Minstermen chief explained: "He's a bit away from starting a game because he's a young man who's just come into the club.

"He's probably a boy in a man's body as far as the under-18s are concerned, but he's still a young boy in a man's game at pro level. At the moment, it's about encouraging him, educating him, coaching him and trying to make him better and believe in himself, because he has good ability.

"He's also dealt well with the mental side of things. That's not an issue, which is a good trait in a young player."
