THE future of the 84-year-old York Charity Cricket Cups competition is in the balance.

Secretary Alan Robinson and assistant secretary Don Layfield are stepping down from the committee at the annual general meeting on October 30, having run the competition since 1994. The committee are appealing for applications to fill the posts and keep alive a competition that has been running since 1930.

Robinson said: “We jointly took over running of the competition in 1994. “Since then, and with the backing of other dedicated committee members, we have ensured the continuation of the competition, which is the longest running evening cup competition in York.

“However, the remaining members of the committee are in the senior citizen age group.

“New, young blood is needed, not only to take over as secretary but also to enhance committee numbers, to take the competition forward to its centenary in 2030. “Failure to find a new secretary may well mean the demise of the competition.”
