GOALS from on-loan Manchester City striker Devante Cole and Kane Hemmings knocked York City out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Barnsley.

The result left Nigel Worthington's Minstermen still waiting for their first win of the season and out of two cup competitions by the first week in September.

But, in a familiar story for City followers this season, had the visitors taken their chances as well as Cole - the 19-year-old son of ex-England striker Andy - and Hemmings then it could have been the visitors and not their SkyBet League One hosts progressing to the second round.

The Minstermen made one change to the side that kicked off Saturday’s 0-0 home draw against Wycombe as last season’s top scorer Wes Fletcher made his first start since mid-February due to medial knee ligament damage with Jake Hyde dropping to the bench.

City settled quickly into the game but it took more than 20 minutes before either side mustered a shot on goal.

Luke Summerfield’s 25-yard effort, following good combination play Antony Straker and Fletcher, then only required a routine save from Tykes shot-stopper Adam Davies.

A hopeful Keith Lowe attempt drifted wide from further out moments later, before fellow centre-back John McCombe’s powerful downward header bounced wide following Summerfield’s corner.

Good work by Straker and Fletcher teed up another chance for Summerfield that he struck high and wide from the edge of the box.

Straker also headed well over from Lindon Meikle’s right-wing centre before Barnsley managed their first shot of the night on 36 minutes.

Former Scunthorpe striker Sam Winnall picked out Conor Hourihane in the visitors’ penalty box but, after he tiptoed his way into a good shooting position ten yards from goal, his low shot was deflected narrowly wide.

Michael Ingham then spilled Dale Jennings’ low 20-yard drive from the subsequent corner but his team-mates cleared the danger.

At the other end, Lowe missed a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock when he volleyed back across the face of goal from three yards after meeting Summerfield’s corner to the far post.

Winnall went on to finish poorly, curling into Ingham’s stomach from 20 yards at the end of a purposeful, left-channel raid.

Moments after the restart, Hourihane's 25-yard free kick cleared the City crossbar after Marvin McCoy had picked up a yellow card to prevent Jennings from racing on to a Winnall through ball.

Jennings' long-range drive was also saved low to his right by Ingham, while ex-Tyke Michael Coulson flashed a menacing effort wide of the far post for the Minstermen after cutting in from right.

A quick exchange of passes between Hourihane and Winnall saw the former call Ingham into action just before the hour and Cole, who had been quiet for most of the match, drove wide from a narrow angle shortly afterwards.

He made no mistake with his next chance, however, prodding in from three yards at the far post to open the scoring following an excellently-delivered low right-wing cross by James Bree.

City might have struck back instantly but Straker shot weakly wide from 12 yards with his right foot after working his way into a good position before Ingham was equal to a low Jennings drive.

Lewis Montrose, on as a substitute, fired wildly off target on 79 minutes for the visitors before Hemmings doubled Barnsley's lead with a terrific strike.

Picking the ball up from Hourihane, Hemmings beat Ingham with a fierce 25-yard attempt that bounced in off the City keeper's left-hand post to put the outcome beyond doubt.
