YORK City boss Nigel Worthington is hoping the club can give Bootham Crescent a successful send-off prior to the move to Monks Cross in 2016.

The Minstermen are currently playing their penultimate campaign at the 82-year-old venue, with work due to begin on the new community stadium next spring.

Ahead of tomorrow’s SkyBet League Two home meeting with Wycombe Wanderers, Worthington insisted that it was impossible to forecast whether he would still be at the helm for the relocation but he is keen to help the club sign off in style from the ground that has been their home since 1932.

He said: “We want to have a good season and it would be great to do well during these last two years at Bootham Crescent because it has been a fantastic stadium for the club for more than 80 years.

“It has stood the club in good stead but, as in all walks of life, you have to move forward, onwards and upwards.

“We have to make sure we keep performing well in this stadium and pick up good results before we look forward to moving to the new one.”

When asked whether he would like to be in situ for the first game in the new surroundings, Worthington laughed off the thought, adding: “Two weeks is a long time in football, never mind two years, so we won’t talk about that.

“But, from the club’s point of view and our supporters, to have a new stadium almost off the plans and on to the site is a fantastic step.

It’s another big plus and a lot of credit has to go to the chairman for getting to this point because he has put a hell of a lot of hard work into the project and has been consistently on the case all the while.”

With Ryan Jarvis returning to training following his ankle injury, City’s only absentee against Wycombe tomorrow will be long-term cruciate ligament casualty Josh Carson.

Winger Lindon Meikle has recovered from the illness that only saw him play a substitute role during the 1-1 draw at Exeter.

Said Worthington: “He’s fine and has trained well all week, so he’s back in the frame.”

Along with a possible recall for Meikle, City are also expected to make a change in the centre of defence, where John McCombe could come back in contention.

“If we need to adjust, I will do,” Worthington explained.

“But it’s all about individuals knowing their roles and, if somebody is under pressure, helping them out because that’s what the game is all about.”

Wycombe are among the division’s early pacesetters, lying fifth in the table with three wins from four matches and, on the challenge ahead for his team, the Bootham Crescent boss, said: “They have had a very good start and we won’t be under-estimating them.

“We know what we are up against and, if we don’t do our jobs, individually and collectively, we will be in for a shock.”

Worthington went on to reveal that he is not expecting to make any permanent additions to his squad ahead of the closing of the transfer window on Monday.

“That’s highly unlikely,” he revealed.

“We’ve got a good group of players, who are very honest and hard working.

“We are a League Two side and we have our limitations, but we have just got to do what we are good at, which we did for the first four games of this season.”
