YORK City centre-back Keith Lowe reckons Luke Summerfield’s corners can help him carry on scoring throughout the new SkyBet League Two season.

Lowe grabbed his second goal of the two-week-old campaign during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Exeter from the third of four headed chances created by summer signing Summerfield’s flag kicks.

As former Cheltenham Town team-mates, the pair are familiar with each other’s games and Lowe, who has netted 21 times in his career, believes he can continue to benefit from the quality of Summerfield’s set-piece deliveries.

Last season’s Press Player of the Year said: “Luke’s always been able to put in a great ball and I got on the end of four corners (at Exeter), which is brilliant. The longer that continues, hopefully, the more goals I will get.

“I should have scored right at the end as well on Saturday. The ball dropped over their player’s head and I just lost sight of it, so it hit me in the face more than me heading it.

“But I was very happy with the goal I scored and I’ve got two for the season already, which is a good return.”

At the other end of the pitch, though, Lowe is keen for the team to get back into the habit of keeping clean sheets.

Following the 28-year-old defender’s switch from Cheltenham to Bootham Crescent in November, he enjoyed 20 shut-outs in 32 outings last season.

But, five fixtures into the new campaign, the Minstermen are yet to prevent any of their opponents finding the net, with Lowe adding: “We are doing our utmost to change that.

“I don’t think we have been defending badly as a team. Maybe there have just been one or two little errors that have cost us throughout the team, because I’m not just talking about the keeper or back four when I say that.

“It’s a squad game and we keep clean sheets together and score together.”

Lowe was partnered with close-season recruit Dave Winfield for the first time in a competitive starting line-up at Exeter and, on their partnership, the former said: “It got better throughout the game.

“We only played together for one-and-a-half pre-season games, so it’s a new one, but Dave’s a good player so that shouldn’t be a problem.”

Whereas Lowe feels City were unlucky to only pick up three draws and a defeat from their opening four fixtures, he accepted that another share of the spoils was the right reward for their St James Park performance, admitting: “It was a point gained this time, instead of two lost.

“I think we were a fair way off our best and I’m not sure what that was down to, but it was another game unbeaten and all the lads really showed character not to lose and come away with a draw.”

Fatigue may have played a part at the weekend with the 300-mile trek to Devon completing a busy schedule of five fixtures in a fortnight and Lowe confessed that he is pleased to have a free midweek for the first time this term ahead of Saturday’s home clash against early high-flyers Wycombe.

“Not having a Tuesday game is welcome, especially with the journey we had at the weekend,” Lowe pointed out. “It’s good to have a full week on the training pitch to nail a few things down before we go again on Saturday.

“It will be another tough game, as they all are in this league, so we will need to get back to playing like we did during the first four matches of the season.”
