POCKLINGTON claimed a 55-53 win over second-placed Poppleton to continue their fight to stay in division one of the Fulford Ladies Invitational Tennis League.

They traded places with York 2, whose defeat to Dunnington means they are in the battle to see who goes down with Boston Spa.

Wendy Stirke and Sasha Taylor teamed up to take 33 games in York 1’s commanding 95-13 win over David Lloyd, who were only able to field two couples.

The Clifton Park club remain on course to retain the title, while David Lloyd try to hold on to their division one status.

The week’s top scorers came from division two, where Jill McCreedy and Jill Rounce took 34 of Fulford 1’s 83 games against Dunnington. That secured Fulford’s promotion back to the top flight, though not the title as Starbeck’s 57-51 victory at Bish kept alive the race for top spot.

Fulford 2 and Knaresborough drew at the other end of the table, so both are relegated.

Appleton are still top of division three after a big victory over Rowntree Park, aided by a 30-game haul from Emma Cashmore and Judy Marriott.

Bubwith completed their division six program with a 66-42 win over Wilberfoss to finish the season with a 100 per cent record.
