YORK City Baths Club ace James Wilby booked his place in the final of the 100 metres breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old Strensall swimmer finished fifth in the second semi-final last night, but his time of one minute, 0.94 seconds was enough to put him into tonight’s final, which is scheduled for 8.50pm.

The Loughborough University student, swimming in his first major international event, finished sixth in the final of the 200m breaststroke on Thursday.

His third event, the 50m breaststroke, gets under way tomorrow morning.

Edinburgh’s Daniel Wallace had Tollcross rocking as he came from behind to win Scotland’s third pool gold of the Games.

The 21-year-old anthropology student survived a tough test of his character in the 400m individual medley final but passed with flying colours as he stormed past rival Thomas Fraser-Holmes in the final 50m.

His winning performance - timed at four minutes 11.20 seconds - was a perfect demonstration of patience, with Wallace waiting for the right moment to pounce on his tiring opponent.

His victory was his nation’s third gold of their home games, following the Saltire successes recorded by Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch on day one.
