STRENSALL swimmer James Wilby swept into the final of the 200 metres breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games today.

The City of York Baths Club star made his international debut this morning at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, in Glasgow, and shone - winning his heat in two minutes, 11.62 seconds.

Wilby beat off Wales's Rob Holderness and Australia's Christian Sprenger to post a mark in the first of three heats. He was third with 50 metres remaining but finished strongly.

The 20-year-old then had to wait for the times from the remaining two heats before being able to celebrate a place in tonight's final.

He qualified sixth fastest but has some four seconds to make up on the fastest qualifier - Scotland's Ross Murdoch.
