YORK ACORN'S desire to be the best of the rest will be put to a stern test when Shaw Cross Sharks visit Thanet Road in National Conference League division one on Saturday.

Scott Rhodes' men moved into fifth in the table following their closely fought 26-24 win over third placed Myton Warriors last week and are now only a point away from the side they vanquished.

With Rochdale Mayfield and Oulton Raiders seemingly having the two promotion spots locked up, the race is on to finish right behind them and Acorn could put themselves in prime position with another win.

But Shaw Cross gave a warning of their prowess last time out when running in ten tries as they hammered Normanton Knights, in fourth, 50-0 - with Ryan Chalkley and James Davies helping themselves to hat-tricks.

Acorn, however, showed huge character in their Myton success, recovering from an 18-8 deficit at half-time to pick up their eighth win of the season as Gareth Singleton, Ken Johnson and two Ryan Gallacher tries helped complete a remarkable comeback for Rhodes' side.

The Blue & Golds must surely take confidence from that as they entertain a marauding Shaw Cross outfit.

In NCL division three, Heworth host Coventry Bears.

It's been another long campaign so far for the Villagers, who have lost nine of their 13 league matches, but they will harbour high hopes against a Bears team in mid-table that they forced a 26-26 draw with in the East Midlands in March.

Acorn 'A', meanwhile, go to title-seeking Kippax Knights in the Yorkshire Men's League premier division, while Heworth 'A' are also on their travels - visiting Normanton Knights in Group 2.
