YORK City wing pair Anthony Straker and Lindon Meikle have been told to carry on frightening defenders.

Straker opened his City account with the third goal during tonight’s 4-0 friendly win at Raith Rovers after charging purposefully at the home defence.

Fellow flank man Lindon Meikle also threatened throughout and City chief Nigel Worthington was pleased with the duo’s performances following Saturday’s 2-0 pre-season defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Commenting on his wingers, after seeing Straker join Michael Coulson, Dave Winfield and Jake Hyde on the scoresheet in Kirkcaldy, Worthington said: “Something I wasn’t happy with on Saturday was the two wide players getting the ball and playing it back. They have got great pace and I want them to use it.

“I want them to be direct in their thinking and, when they get the ball, get at defenders, get into the box and get goals. They showed they have the capacity to do that against Raith, so it’s just about having that mental belief, because they can be hard to handle and a threat.”

Worthington was also encouraged by his team’s general display, adding: “I was very pleased with the overall performance. It was more like us than Saturday’s game.

“We showed what we are about and what we will be about. The pressing was good, some of the football was good and getting four goals was obviously nice for confidence.

“It was a good solid team performance against a Raith Rovers side with a lot of good players and what probably pleased me most was the shape of the team.”

Coulson scored City’s first goal from a fifth-minute free kick and Winfield headed in the second from a corner, leading Worthington to reiterate how important dead-ball deliveries remain to his team.

“You can win and lose games from set-plays and it’s extremely pleasing when little things you work on come off in games,” he explained. “It highlights to players that the time spent on them is useful.”
