NEW boys Dave Winfield, Anthony Straker and Jake Hyde all scored their first goals in York City colours during a thumping 4-0 win at Raith Rovers.

The trio of summer signings found the net after Michael Coulson had set the ball rolling with a fifth-minute free kick.

It was an excellent way for City to kick off their Scotland tour and Nigel Worthington's men were cheered on by a jubilant 70-strong following throughout.

Jason Mooney retained his starting place in the City goal and was called into quick action when he kept out an unmarked Calum Eliot header from inside the six-yard box following Jason Thomson’s right-wing cross.

But it was the Minstermen who forged in front when Ryan Jarvis was tripped 20 yards out following a poor clearance by Raith keeper Ross Laidlaw.

The Rovers number one then compounded his error when he could not keep out Coulson’s subsequent low drive to his left.

Moments later, Russell Penn fired over from long range and Coulson’s rising effort from a narrow angle was kept out at his near post by Laidlaw.

At the other end, Mooney did well to push a curling Ryan Conroy free kick around his left-hand upright and the latter then crossed for Christian Nade to head wide from four yards.

On 21 minutes, Mooney was only required to make a routine save from a second Conroy set-piece before a deflected Coulson edge-of-the-box attempt led to the visitors’ second goal.

Straker’s resulting corner picked out Winfield in the Raith six-yard box and Thomson, defending the far post, could not keep out the ex-Shrewsbury defender’s towering header.

City were now dominating proceedings with Femi Ilesanmi, Coulson and Jarvis both trying their luck from distance before Straker led and finished a devastating counter attack.

The former Southend winger sprinted at the heart of the home defence before feeding Jarvis on the left wing.

He then carried on his run, reaching the six-yard box to tap in Jarvis’ return ball.

Another positive burst went on to see Lindon Meikle drive off target on the stroke of half-time.

City continued to look the fitter side after the break with Straker riding two challenges during a determined and powerful charge into the home box, leading to a 12-yard chance for Jarvis that he fired wide.

Summerfield and Jarvis went on to have consecutive attempts cleared off the line before Hyde added a spectacular fourth goal just five minutes after coming off the bench.

The former Barnet forward sent a 25-yard strike crashing in off a well-beaten Laidlaw's left-hand post.

Home sub Lewis Vaughan then managed Raith's first shot on the City goal for 50 minutes with his first touch, trying his luck from 25 yards to call Mooney back into action.

But Hyde continued to look sharp for the Minstermen, forcing two saves in quick succession from Laidlaw with the second - a downward header - pushed on to the Raith shot-stopper's left-hand post.

Mooney, meanwhile, safely gathered Grant Anderson's 25-yard drive at the other end, while Coulson, who was full of industry all evening, flashed a 20-yard shot wide, forced a finger-tip save from substitute Raith keeper David McGurn with a well-struck free kick and also hit an upright with a deflected, angled attempt during the closing stages.
