OVINGTON powered into the semi-finals of the HPH Cup with a crushing 174-run victory against Burn on Saturday.

The York Vale League champions were in merciless mood as they piled up 270-6 in the baking sun, Tom Ashby (94) and Pete Kelly (88) sharing a partnership of 180. Craig Nicholl (4-19) then ripped out the top order as Burn were shot out for 96.

Matt Huffer notched an unbeaten half-century as Heworth posted 172-8 against Clifton Alliance who cruised home with ten overs to spare after Chris Elliott (56no) and Matt Taylor (42no) came together with the score on 114-3.

It was closer at Hirst Courtney where Jake Wild struck 68 in the home side’s 193 all out against North Duffield. A shock looked on the cards as Duffield nosedived to 52-5 but a maiden half-century by Matthew Fortnam (53) and an unbeaten 52 by Mark McDonald, aided by some late hitting by Nick Hatfield earned the first division side a three-wicket win with seven balls to spare.

Rich Grimes and Dan Fairclough bowled Stockton & Hopgrove to victory in the Guy Mitchell Cup after their batsmen struggled against Ben Johnson. Needing just 114 to win, BJ were rocked as paceman Fairclough struck three times early on before Grimes came on to demolish the printers for just 79 with a 5-7 haul in 8.2 overs.

Stillingfleet and Selby will have to replay after a thrilling tie. Chasing 104 for victory, Selby looked in command until Steve Sherwood (50) was caught with seven runs required. Last pair Mike Thorpe and Nathan Dye got the scores level before Phil Corfield bowled Dye.

The battle of the Caves was a one-sided affair with the Ferguson brothers James (54) and Will (52no) providing the platform for North Cave’s 240-5 before the accurate swing of Mike Stellings blew South away for just 50 with superb figures of 10-5-11-7.

After bowling Melbourne out for 148, Kelfield were rescued from 66-7 by a match-winning stand by Neil Atkinson (60no) and Matty Pearce (34no).

Hemingbrough get extra help from wayward Taddy

NO fewer than 64 extras helped Hemingbrough to victory over Tadcaster Magnet in the HPH York Vale League’s Scothern Construction Cup.

Hemingbrough ended up totalling 243-8 thanks to that wayward attack, with Rob Peet hitting 40 and taking 5-28 for the victors.

Alex Brown’s 52 proved crucial as Yapham edged out Heworth II and solid contributions right down the order saw Bishopthorpe II post 226-9 against Thorpe Willoughby II who managed just 108, Alex Bindloss taking 4-26.

The previous day Bindloss’ father, Ed, marked his Bish II debut with figures of 8-3-14-6 against Stockton & Hopgrove as the Bishops earned their first division three win of the season.

Whirlwind bowling by Farath Ansar (4-21) skittled Thorpe Willoughby for just 59 as leaders Acomb cemented top spot.

Thorpe’s seconds fared even worse in division four against Heworth II as they were routed for 48, Stuart Ross including a hat-trick in his 6-24.

Selby II spinner Alex Bowden picked up 6-43 against Burton Salmon whose Paul Ward responded with 5-20 as the villagers emerged easy winners.
