LANDING most of York City’s transfer targets early will help the players to bond ahead of the start of the League Two season, believes assistant manager Steve Torpey.

After club chiefs revealed that, from a list of seven players they wanted to bring into Bootham Crescent following the end of the campaign, they had secured six, Torpey reckons the time they will now spend together will prove vital as they are integrated into the Minstermen’s style of play.

“If you can, and it is sometimes a little bit more difficult to get your squad established, you want everyone back in and up to speed with training,” said Torpey.

“If you sign players a week and two weeks into pre-season, they may miss out on training - the physical aspects as well as the social side with the boys.

“We are going up to Scotland for six days, which again will be team bonding. We will all be together 24 hours a day, and I think if you can assemble your squad the earlier in pre-season the better.”
