York Press: York City building team spirit York City building team spirit

LANDING most of York City’s transfer targets early will help the players to bond ahead of the start of the League Two season, believes assistant manager Steve Torpey.

After club chiefs revealed that, from a list of seven players they wanted to bring into Bootham Crescent following the end of the campaign, they had secured six, Torpey reckons the time they will now spend together will prove vital as they are integrated into the Minstermen’s style of play.

“If you can, and it is sometimes a little bit more difficult to get your squad established, you want everyone back in and up to speed with training,” said Torpey.

“If you sign players a week and two weeks into pre-season, they may miss out on training - the physical aspects as well as the social side with the boys.

“We are going up to Scotland for six days, which again will be team bonding. We will all be together 24 hours a day, and I think if you can assemble your squad the earlier in pre-season the better.”

The game, as we all know, is physical and psychological in equal parts. A good tour/training camp will provide the former and the team bonding will sort out the latter. The body language and team spirit towards the end of the season was fantastic and it will be great for the players to benefit from getting together as a unit so early.
All seems well with the squad and I will be very interested to see the final group. Last season we started with a lot of late recruits and loan players, which prevented this pre-season plan, so this all bodes well.

So, we have managed to get six out of seven targeted players, that must be some sort of record at this level. As for the other one, are we still talking to him or has he turned us down ? If he has turned us down I think he should be named and shamed. Ha Ha Oh well it's his loss ! Onward and upward COME ON CITY

I believe that we have missed out on one signing, and that is the centre half. While I have no proof, I heard from a few that we were in for cresswell from Fleetwood but I don't reckon we could afford him. That, and I don't think there is a chance winfield was one of his top seven targets this summer- not at all a slant on his ability as nige and co will have done their research, that is my mere opinion though

So who do you think will sit alongside Penn in midfield?

Are there any more signings or will it be Platt, Parslow or someone from last years Reserves?
