FORMER York cricketer Eric Blott has died aged 85 near his home in Bedfordshire.

He collapsed from a suspected heart attack after a successful game of carpet bowls in the village hall.

Blott and his family lived in Main Avenue, Heworth, and he played for many years for Clifton Cricket Club.

Blott, pictured, was northern organiser of the National Union of Journalists, based in York, and then moved south to become national organiser and then deputy general secretary.

He leaves three sons - Steve, a retired teacher, Tony, a local builder, and Tim, a newspaper executive.
