JOHN QUINN is set to boost his Royal Ascot team of two-year-olds after Pres Rapide broke his maiden at York Racecourse.

The Norton trainer, who is already sending juveniles The Wow Signal and Harry’s Dancer to Berkshire next week, has entered his Knavesmire winner for the Norfolk Stakes after he hacked up comfortably in the Constant Security Irish Stallions Farms EBF Maiden Stakes.

Keen early on, Pres Rapide (5-6 fav) was always up with the pace and, despite a brief challenge from runner-up Short N Sweet, went on to win by a length and a half.

With Al Shaqab Racing having bought into The Wow Signal and Harry’s Dancer ahead of respective engagements in the Coventry and Queen Mary Stakes at the Royal Meeting, Quinn was also keen to point out his latest runner was up for grabs.

“I’ve put him in the Norfolk and I like him,” he said. “He’s a quick colt. I said to Philip Makin (jockey) ‘don’t blast him, even if you think you are on the best horse’.

“He’s a good two-year-old. He has an entry in the Norfolk, which he will probably take up and he is up for sale to stay in the yard.

“He’s a horse that will turn up in the graded races.”

Quinn also has Ascot entries for Agreement in the Ascot Stakes and Levitate in the Royal Hunt Cup.

Totalize (8-1) will bid for Newcastle's Northumberland Plate after dominating the Garbutt & Elliott Stakes. Giving rider Megan Carberry a York winner on her first ride at the track, the five-year-old beat Eagle Rock by three-and-a-half lengths for Norton trainer Brian Ellison.

"He's a difficult horse to ride because he can get keen," he said. "He goes for the Plate if he gets in and he is a good horse on his day. He's got plenty of ability. I've never really run him on this ground before but he obviously likes it."

In another York day dominated by North Yorkshire trainers, Malton's Neville Bycroft was shaking his head in disbelief after Willbeme (12-1) bolted up in the BetBright For Your World Cup Bets Fillies’ Stakes.

The six-year-old, a bargain £2,500 buy from Doncaster sales, was never threatened in beating joint favourite Bondesire by three-and-a-quarter lengths in the £25,000 six furlong contest.

Lightly raced for her age following a succession of issues, including a broken pelvis as a three-year-old, the daughter of Kyllachy delivered Bycroft’s first York winner in about a decade.

“We haven’t thought too far in front,” Bycroft admitted when asked about Willbeme’s next target. “This was too far.”

In-form Boroughbridge jockey Paul Mulrennan picked up a York winner after steering Sudest (8-1) to victory in the six furlong SKF Rous Selling Stakes.

The two-year-old, trained by Kevin Ryan at Sutton Bank, had half a length in hand over Izzthatright. The son of Tagula had led narrowly at half-way and fended off a brief challenge before asserting in the £12,000 contest.

“He’s improving with every run,” said the trainer’s son, Adam. “It was a long way to be out in front and he just got a bit lonely. He’s won with a bit in hand.”

Alejandro (7-1), under rider Silvestre De Sousa, produced a game display of front-running as Nawton trainer David O’Meara extended his lead at the top of the York champion trainer table.

The-five-year-old led from virtually pillar to post to beat Foxtrot Romeo by one-and-a-half lengths in the Geoff Pemberton Memorial Stakes and give the Irishman his fourth victory of the season on Knavesmire.

He picked up his fifth when Saved By The Bell (4-1 fav) claimed the final Jigsaw Sponsorship Services Apprentice Stakes under jockey Sam James.
