Yorkshire were frustrated in their attempts to force victory on the final day against Nottinghamshire at Headingley and were set an unlikely target of 294 off a minimum of 39 overs.

Resuming the final morning with Nottinghamshire 60 runs ahead on 102 for two, Yorkshire’s hopes of claiming victory were boosted after they claimed three wickets in the morning session.

But a 115-run partnership between James Taylor and Nottinghamshire captain Chris Read ensured Yorkshire’s victory hopes faded and the visitors eventually declared at tea on 335 for eight.

Steve Patterson had been the pick of Yorkshire’s attack during the morning session with an opening spell of 9-4-14-2, including two wickets in an over, dismissing former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb for 49 when he was caught behind and then Samit Patel clipped to short mid-wicket.

Tim Bresnan won an lbw decisioin against Riki Wessels, but Read and Taylor combined in a partnership that all but ended Yorkshire’s hopes of facing a more manageable victory target.

Taylor fell four runs short of his first championship century of the season when he clipped Bresnan to square leg and Read became the England all-rounder’s fourth victim when he was caught in the deep after hitting 75 off 94 balls.

Nottinghamshire’s declaration may have been delayed because seamer Luke Fletcher has been struggling with a back spasm and is unlikely to bowl.
