York City recruitment not over yet says assistant boss Steve Torpey

TWO or three players could yet be making their way to Bootham Crescent, believes York City assistant manager Steve Torpey.

Unveiling the club's latest acquisition, as right-back Marvin McCoy signed a two year deal with the Minstermen, Nigel Worthington's right hand man said more wide options and a midfielder were still on the agenda.

City moved quickly to agree a contract with 25-year-old McCoy after Lanre Oyebanjo turned down an offer and elected to sign for League One Crawley Town.

And Torpey said McCoy, who played more than 100 games for Wycombe before being released and has been capped at international level by Antigua and Barbuda, had been on their radar for some time.

"When Lanre decided he wasn't going to sign his contract, we were on the lookout and had something near enough in place if he did turn the contract down," Torpey explained.

"We have been looking at Marvin for a period of time and in the two games we played last season he did very well. It was a no-brainer. He comes with good experience, he's a good size and a good age. I think he can only do well for the club.

"Lanre did ever so well but things move on and players move on. We are looking forward to a new start now."

On the transfer business yet to come, Torpey added: "The chairman and Nigel have done their business very early and I think that is always a good sign rather than leaving it for a week or two weeks before pre-season.

"I think we have assembled a squad now that can definitely compete. I think we are looking at two or three more players and that would be us near enough done. We are bang on schedule.

"Looking at the new signings, I think it is quality rather than quantity. That's what we tried to do last season with the players we brought in. I think we are still looking at wide areas and maybe another midfield player. We are getting there."

Chairman Jason McGill said the last few weeks had been "a little bit hectic" but declared his delight with the club's latest capture.

He explained: "I think we have identified some quality players who are going to add more value to the squad. I think Marvin's signing is important because Lanre was such a hero.

"It's absolutely fantastic. I think he's quite a different player to Lanre. He hasn't necessarily got the power but, in terms of getting up and down (the pitch), he's very fit and very quick just like Femi Ilesanmi and one-on-one they are going to be hard to get past which all bodes well for us."

There's lots of speculation and columns being written about Lampard joining New York City and we certainly are a new line up since this time last year!

O'Toole would be superb but doubt we could offer him what he will be demanding. I see Wallace has re-signed for Pompey - pity!

i would have thought we need another central defender too otherwise what cover do we have other than Dan Parslow.i appreciate having a small squad but unless we are going straight into the loan market id say we need two wide players a central midfielder and a central defender. but then if Nigel has a couple of decent youngsters hes happy to actually bring into the first team squad if needed that could be the key. Last season we had the youngster Dickinson on the bench quite a few games but even when we had little choice regards strikers he wasnt really used, hopefully the difference this season will be any youngsters we have in or close to the first team squad will be of Nigels choice.
