YORKSHIRE demonstrated their strength in depth by claiming four wickets to put Nottinghamshire into trouble on the opening day of their championship match at Headingley.

Having lost Liam Plunkett to England Test duty, bringing in Richard Pyrah for his first championship start in nearly a year, there were doubts about how Yorkshire would respond.

But on a bouncy pitch, they overcame the disadvantage of Nottinghamshire winning the toss and batting first and reduced them to 46-4 before they recovered to reach 84-4 at lunch.

Nottinghamshire enjoyed a positive start, racing to 32 without loss in just nine overs, but paid the price with Alex Hales being bowled by Steve Patterson driving loosely.

He was followed in the next over by former Yorkshire batsman Phil Jaques, superbly caught low at second slip by Adam Lyth after he edged Tim Bresnan.

But Nottinghamshire’s collapse gained momentum when Jack Brooks was switched to the Kirkstall Lane End to replace Bresnan and claimed two wickets in five balls in his second over back.

James Taylor fell lbw playing around a full-length ball and four balls later Samit Patel, the leading scorer in division one, attempted to cut off the back foot but only succeeded in picking out Adil Rashid at backward point.
