Selby Shotokan Karate Club topped the medal table at a Karate Competition held at York College on Sunday May 4.

The Selby-based club fought off competition from 12 other clubs from the Japan Karate Shotrenmei Association to head the competition table, exceeding the expectations of club instructors, Paul and Rebecca Brant.

Scott Haxby stole the show by receiving three medals including two first places in the Adult Brown and Black Belt Mixed Kata and Adult Male Brown and Black Belt Kumite. Haxby also collected the Randy Williams Memorial Cup for Best Performance.

The medals didn’t stop there for the Haxby family as Charlotte won the Under 17s Female Kumite and then came second with Scott in the Family Kata event. Warren Bate also claimed a gold medal in the Adult Beginner to Brown Belt – Mixed Kata.

Xiao Wei Han claimed a second place in the Adult Beginner to Brown Belt – Mixed Kata along with another silver medal in the Adult Female Beginner to Brown Belt Kumite. Emily Crockford also matched her teammate’s efforts in the Under 17s Mixed Kata.

Leah Fielding finished third in her Under 12s Mixed Kata and Myles Phillips also collected the bronze medal in the Under 12s Mixed Kumite event.

The medal haul went as follows:

Selby Shotokan Karate Club train at the Barlby High school on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm and Sunday evenings from 5.30pm and cater for all ages from 6 years upwards in a family friendly environment.
