Coulson and Oyebanjo offered deals but Puri, Reed, Andrew and Allan released

York Press: York City forward Michael Coulson York City forward Michael Coulson

YORK City manager Nigel Worthington feels “positive” about the chances of retaining the services of Lanre Oyebanjo and Michael Coulson for next season.

The out-of-contract pair have been offered new deals for 2014/15, while Sander Puri, Adam Reed, Calvin Andrew, Tom Allan, Chris Dickinson and Shaq McDonald have all been released by the Minstermen.

Oyebanjo, who scooped three Player of the Year awards this week, is believed to be interesting the likes of League One Crawley Town and both he and Coulson would be entitled to free transfers under the Bosman ruling.

Oyebanjo has requested time to consider his offer, but The Press understands Coulson is close to putting pen to paper.

Having held discussions with the duo yesterday, Worthington was encouraged by their responses, saying: “I am very positive about both situations.

“Lanre wants to go on holiday and think about things and that’s perfectly fine. I’ve heard the rumours but he’s not told me directly that he would like to move back down south again and I know he has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the club and appreciated how well he has been treated.

“Sometimes, that counts for a lot and, if Lanre does move on, I know he is the type of player who will need that club and the personnel to be right. Going into a different environment might not suit him, but he will have to decide what’s right with him.”

Reed and Andrew both finished the season in City’s starting XI but have not been handed new deals at Bootham Crescent, while Worthington also decided against an option to extend the stay of Estonian international Puri in North Yorkshire.

On that trio, he explained: “The football club is at a stage where we want to nudge things forward all the time.

“Adam played his part towards the end of the season but I want to exercise my right to have a look around over the course of the summer to see if there’s anything we can improve on in that area to make us stronger. I explained that to him and he accepted it.

“Calvin bought into our system very well and worked really hard but the one thing he was shy on was goals and efforts on goal which, in his role, he has to provide. The harsh reality of the game is, if you want to be a centre forward, you have to score goals.

“Sander was unfortunate to pick up a couple of hamstring and knee injuries that hampered his season and he never really got going after that so he is free to go elsewhere.”

Teenage defender Allan, meanwhile, has had the offer of a two-year contract withdrawn after he failed to accept it within a one-month timeframe.

Gateshead, managed by ex-City chief Gary Mills, are believed to be interested in his services, but any potential future employer would be required to pay a compensation fee, agreed between the two clubs or settled by a tribunal, if they signed him.

“We offered Tom a two-year contract but, as part of that, he should have come back to the club within four weeks,” Worthington revealed. “He hasn’t done that and we can’t hang around.

“We are looking at another centre half and I am not the type of manager who wants to carry a lot of bodies so, unfortunately for Tom, we explained that we were withdrawing the offer because of the lack of a response from him but we will still be entitled to a compensation fee if another club takes him on and we wish him all the best for the future.”

First-year pro Dickinson leaves the club after just two brief substitute outings while mid-season 18-year-old recruit McDonald failed to make a single senior appearance.

On their departures, Worthington added: “They are two young lads but, if you carry too many bodies, players can soon get lost so we have freed them both to get on with their lives and careers elsewhere because we are looking to strengthen the squad.”

Cameron Murray, meanwhile, is the only second-year apprentice, to be offered and sign professional terms with Tom Chamberlain, who made two first-team substitute appearances last season, being released after an extended opportunity to prove his worth.

“We gave Tom four weeks extra over the other second-years but, unfortunately, there was just not quite enough coming through from him,” the City boss pointed out.

With David McGurk also retiring from the full-time game, the departures leave the Minstermen with 12 players - Ryan Bowman, Josh Carson, Wes Fletcher, Michael Ingham, Ryan Jarvis, Keith Lowe, John McCombe, Lewis Montrose, Murray, Dan Parslow, Russell Penn and Tom Platt – who are under contract for next season.

No surprises really .Adam Reed never looked the player he was at the end of the season and needs to be replaced with a play maker to work alongside Russell Penn.Andrew did a good job but we need a goalscorer to work alongside a hopefully fit Wes Fletcher
A pity Allan is leaving but good luck to the lad obviously his chances of first team football are limited with the form of Lowe and McCombe.
Puri and Mcdonald were rarely seen and obviously NW feels he can sign better.
I hope NW can get his targets as soon as possible and hope Lanre and Coulson both remain although it looks like Lanre is hankering after a move south and if he does good luck to him he has been immense for City.

No surprises really. Much credit must go to Reed and Andrew who both came into the team and contributed to the success we had. I am sure both will secure a club for next season.

Puri and MacDonald are no surprises. Disappointed Allan didn't respond to the club and Dickinson hasn't made a case to be retained.

Let's see who Worthington brings in. The last transfer window was a resounding success so more of the same please.

Thanks to the released players for their efforts & wish them all the best for the future but at the end of the day NW has pretty much found his feet in this league & recognises the qualities required to be competitive in league 2 which he does not see in all these players at this time, though I feel Allan will find a niche somewhere just surprised he feels a better opportunity is around the corner. So the search for a player to cover defensive midfield & or CB is on too. Calvin has shown us the qualities necessary to hold the ball & win balls in the air but never looked like being a regular scorer in the short term so his departure allows NW to bring in a more consistent striker or at least a player with potential.
I look forward to seeing who we can attract to City.

Only Tom Allan leaving is a bit of a surprise, I thought that there might be a few more. By not signing his contract young Tom must think that he can do better away from City. What wasted signings Puri and McDonald have been, it just shows you that all signings are a bit of a gamble, some pay-off, others dont. Farewell to Dave McGurk after all his loyal service, "Good Luck" in part-time football TY. I liked the look of Calvin Andrew, but his lack of goals was obviously a deciding factor. Oyebanjo will almost certainly leave and Coulson will want to see what is on offer elsewhere before committing himself. There are plenty of players available, but its just picking the right ones, that is the difficult bit.

Hope we can keep Lanre but perhaps he wants to be closer to home in the south of England.

Reed was poor the times I saw him this season so no surprise there. Andrew isn't the answer, he limited us to Plan A only on Friday night, we need someone who offers something other than a body to aim at.
Doubt Lanre will stay, sure he said before signing last season that he will give us one more year, either that or he was offered a 2 year deal and chose to take a 1. Expect Coulson to sign now he is a regular.

In the 12 months that Worthington has been in charge, he's turned us from relegation certainties into play-off semi-finalists, so I trust his judgement on who should stay or go. I remember when Meredith left and thought it would be a tall order to find similar, but since his departure things have turned out fine. Would be sad to see Banjo leave but as the saying goes, there are plenty more fish in the sea (and Nigel's fishing skills appear to be pretty reliable).

MUDAHIM says...

Suprised about Tom Allan, in two big games, last year and this, he came in and did a job, which without regular football was a great effort. He would have been decent cover without costing too much.
I'm guessing we offered him something fairly paltry, so we got him cheap if he signed or to ensure we get something if he gets fixed up elsewhere (as if you don't make an offer you're not entitled to compensation) .

Reed could be considered unlucky, considering he played about 25 games for us and only ended up on the losing side twice I think, but we all agree that something was missing in midfield and with Penn, Montrose and Platt signed up something had to give and he has missed out to allow us to bring someone new in.

Andrew did a decent job and could also be unlucky as he might have got a contract if Jarvis and Bowman weren't already signed up (he was obviously infront of them in the pecking order) but he's too similar to them (we need some pace in attack)

Puri and McDonald were obvioulsy not Worthington's cup of tea so no suprises and we never got to see them to make a judgement - except on YouTube :-)

I hope Banj and Coulson stay but it's not looking good for keeping the former but there will be plenty of players out there it's just a matter of picking the right ones that are in our budget. As mentioned by someone else Kearns has been released and if he has the right attitude and committment he might fit the bill alongside Penn. McGlashan is a decent player from the little I've seen but not sure if he has teh right character for NW.

Shame it didnt work out for Puri but wasnt it reported that he had a nagging injury for much of the season.? Lanre seems to want to move south and maybe Cambridge might offer something as he was nearby at Histon before coming to us. Of course he might surprise us all, and Crawley, and give it up to a career outside the game as he is well qualified.
I also feel sorry for Adam and Calvin but we have to have goals from midfield and up front ,and this isnt going to happen when they are coupled with Penn and Bowman. As Josh and Wes wont be fully firing until Xmas a few loans are likely to fill the void, and both Marquis and Norris did well as loanees last season. Cavanagh dominated the middle for Rochdale against us but would probably have the wrong age profile for Nigel. We also went after Evan Horwood last summer who then joined Tranmere but ended up at Northampton on loan.

Any chance NW can have a family BBQ with Brendan this summer and open up a channel to the Liverpool Academy ......

And btw, very good to see Big John in the Football League Paper's Div2 Team of the Season, especially with the pay-off comment ,'What were Mansfield thinking of?'
