SELBY Town have announced Dave Ricardo as their new manager, with ex-Robins player Chris Dickman as his number two.

Ricardo left his post at Beverley Town after two years with the Humber Premier Division side, winning the title on both occasions along with a North Counties Senior Cup victory this season.

Selby finished 12th in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League division one under former Pickering manager Jimmy Reid, who left the club last week by mutual consent.

The new Flaxley Road manager is keen to improve the league position next year.

“I am really chuffed to be at Selby Town," he said. "It was in the pipeline for a while but I am looking forward to it. The goal for next season is to be at the minimum of top six and challenging for the title.”

Ricardo added: “The nucleus of the squad has talent and can play the style of football I want to play. I have various local contacts that could be used.

"I could possibly bring my own lads in as well as looking at the younger lads coming through the under-19s so everyone will have a clean state.”

Despite becoming the ninth manager in four years at the Robins, the ex-Bridlington and Brigg Town midfielder is looking for a sustained period at the club, so that he can develop the team.

“As part of the interview, I asked for a minimum of two years in the job," he said. "It was hard leaving Beverley Town after losing only two league games in two seasons but the chairman here and the committee are behind the club and it is a club that can go places.”

Ricardo brings with him a man well-known at Flaxley Road in Dickman and feels that could help him settle in at club.

“It is geographical which helps and I have known Chris (Dickman) since we played together at Brigg Town," he said.

"We both want to bring good pressing and attractive football to the team. We played with graft and want that determination for my team.”

Club secretary Tom Arkley said: “He has approached us a couple of times in the past but this seemed the right time.

"He is enthusiastic about moving us forward as a club and has promised to do at least two years at the job – we are looking for stability.

"He did very well at Beverley and moulded them into a force that he can do with us, we want to get out of this division.”

Selby are close to confirming their pre-season fixture schedule.
