STRENSALL swimmer James Wilby is celebrating after being called up to the England squad for the Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old City of York Baths Club star is one of a 39-strong team that will compete for honours at the games in Glasgow in July.

It is the first time Wilby has been called up for any international squad and the Loughborough University student said he was delighted to have got the nod.

Wilby clocked a string of personal best performances on his way to the final of the 200 metres and 100 metres breaststroke at the British Gas National Championships, which doubled as trials for the Commonwealth Games, in April.

“It’s really exciting and I am very much looking forward to the Games,” he said.

“I have never been part of a team internationally for either Britain or England so it is very exciting.

“I am going to go and enjoy it and it is something I have been working towards for more than ten years.

“I intend to go there and gain experience and I would love to get to a final or semi-final but I also want to swim well and enjoy my first meet of this type.”
