YORK City flank man Ryan Brobbel has been told to come flying out of the traps during the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

The on-loan Middlesbrough winger scored his first goal since September when he fired in a spectacular first-half, stoppage-time goal during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe.

City chief Nigel Worthington felt that Brobbel’s fourth goal of the campaign proved the catalyst for a positive second-half display from the Northern Ireland under-21 international but now wants him to start the two play-off semi-final legs against Fleetwood in equally purposeful fashion, beginning with Saturday night's home tie.

On Brobbel’s goal and second-half display at Glanford Park, Worthington said: “He is capable of that and I’ve been asking for more of that from him.

“I am on his case all the time to get into games earlier. He got into Saturday’s match a minute before half-time and scored a fantastic goal.

“His energy levels in the second half were then huge and he was a threat and a real problem for them. We need to get that from the start because, if he does that, he will be a hell of a lot better player.”

Worthington, meanwhile, is backing Calvin Andrew to get back on the scoresheet this season after he claimed City’s second goal that was awarded to Will Hayhurst by the Press Association on the day.

The 6ft 2in striker, without a goal in 16 matches prior to the Scunthorpe trip, stuck his boot out to help divert Hayhurst’s low drilled shot past home keeper Sam Slocombe with Worthington adding: “He has done a lot of donkey work for us.

“That’s important whether it was his goal or not on Saturday and I still believe he can get more goals before the end of the season.”
