CITY of York claimed a clutch of medals when New Earswick & District IBC hosted the Special Olympics Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Indoor Bowls Tournament.

A seven-strong team of bowlers represented City of York against opposition from Bradford , Pudsey, Wakefield and Scarborough, plus an invitation team representing Northern Region.

In division one, Gemma Broadhead had to settle for, losing 6-4 to last year's runner-up and 2012 champion Barry Nicholson, from Wakefield.

Chris McPherson confirmed his progress, moving up to division two and also taking silver.

Sam Hinde, a silver medal winner at a recent boccia tournament, repeated the feat at bowls with a silver in division three.

Andrew Bayston’s gold in division five was hard fought as he shaded two of his games 5- 4 .

Ashley Shaw and Katie Douglas also moved up to higher divisions and gained bronze and a fourth place rosette respectively.

Diane Ward celebrated her first tournament with a bronze.

Scarborough bowlers Johnathon Crookes, Edward Spencer and Stewart Finney all won gold in their respective divisions.
