YORK bounced back from an opening day defeat in emphatic fashion with a 146-run victory over Appleby Frodingham in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

The reigning champions, trounced by Yorkshire Academy the previous week, totalled 217-8 from their 55 overs and then bowled out the visitors for only 71.

Put in to bat in overcast conditions, the home side lost opener Jack Leaning, caught down the legside by keeper Tom Brookes off Paul Hilton for nine with the score on 22.

Simon Lambert and Liam McKendry looked untroubled in adding 37 for the second wicket, but the introduction of spin proved Lambert’s downfall as he edged Duncan Heath to Brookes for 19.

Ryan McKendry failed to score, clean bowled by Jack Forrester’s in-swinging yorker, before the best partnership of the innings yielded 47 for the fourth wicket between Liam McKendry (54) and Alex Collins (22).

When the latter departed to a tumbling catch by Heath at wide mid-off and McKendry followed in the next over having just completed his half-century, York were 112-5.

Nick Kay deserved much of the credit for ensuring York reached a respectable total as his 36 off 40 balls, including five fours, gave impetuous to the second half of the innings.

Jake Murphy and Dave Patmore were victims of Brookes’ smart work, both stumped off wide deliveries down the leg side off Forrester, while Kay was caught behind of Hilton.

A late onslaught saw Tom Pringle (23) and debutant Ben Coad (15) add 36 from the last five overs.

Appleby Frodingham’s top order had no answer to York’s new ball pair.

Murphy picked up the wickets of Morland, clean bowled, and Kieran Lindley, to a well judged return catch, either side of Coad inducing Heath to edge one to keeper Liam McKendry, reducing the Steelmen to 27-3.

Pringle had Kieran Watson stumped and then ran out Brookes, while Zimbabwean David Brent never looked fluent in making 25 from 58 balls. When he was caught behind off Leaning, the score was 56-6.

The first of two wickets for Daniel Woods came when he trapped Jack Dixon lbw and then Leaning took two catches in consecutive balls at slip, the first off Pringle and the second off Woods to dismiss Matt Fowler and Alex Grimes.

Substitute fielder Richard Love, on for the injured Kay, then ran out Forrester to seal an eight-point triumph for the hosts.
