PARACLIMBER Sianagh Gallagher was a double winner at last night's inaugural Active York Sports Awards.
The Acomb teenager was named Young Disabled Sportsperson of the Year and overall Sportsperson of the Year at the awards ceremony at the University of York.
Judges described Gallagher as a "truly deserving nominee" after her rapid rise to the full Great Britain paraclimbing team.
The Outstanding Contribution to Sport accolade was shared by York netball stalwart Val Kennedy and Dave Scoreby, who is involved with schools football in the city
City of York Hockey Club's Katherine Birch, an England U16s player, was named Young Female Sportsperson of the Year, while York Kenshinkan Karate ace Alistair Bevan was Young Male Sportsperson of the Year.
City of York Hockey Club's junior section carried off the Team/Club of the Year prize, the Active
School of the Year was St Wilfrid's Primary and the Active Workplace of the Year award went to York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Long-distance runner Bobbi Phillips was Student Sportsperson of the Year, while the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award was shared between blind tennis champion Kelly Cronin and swimmer Chloe Buck.
Trish Bell, who organises group running sessions, was Coach/Volunteer of the Year at the awards night, where the guest speaker was Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, Chancellor of the University of York.
