THORNTON-LE-CLAY joined University ‘B’ in clinching promotion from division three of the York & District Table Tennis League with a 9-1 demolition of relegation threatened Burnholme ‘A’.

Alan Balmforth and Neil Lynch led the way while captain Trevor Percival has skilfully guided the villagers to successive promotions.

They need a victory in their final match to overhaul the students.

Jan Suchecki and Pete Corner starred for Bootham ‘E’ as they defeated their ‘F’ team 7-3 and in a two a side fixture, York RI ‘F’ prevailed 5-4 against BT ‘B’.

Burnholme ‘A’ are confirmed as promoted from division four following a 9-1 thrashing of an understrength Crescent ‘G’.

York RI ‘H’ ended their season in style with John Mothersill and Paul Greenwood starring in an 8-2 defeat of Crescent ‘F’ but Holgate ‘E’ appear certain to clinch the second promotion slot requiring just a single point from their final match of the season.

Mikey Arnold and Dave Smith picked up three wins each for York RI ‘J’ as they beat York RI ‘I’ 9-1.

Division one champions Coneysthorpe ‘A’ completed their season with a 9-1 triumph over York RI ‘B’ with Martin Lowe and James Rule leading the way.

Despite a maximum from Mick Wilcockson, Holgate ‘B’ drew with second-placed York RI ‘A’ with John Farmery beating Filip Wojtkowiak.

In division two, Shepherds ‘D’ secured their first victory of the season, prevailing 6-4 against a depleted York RI ‘E’ despite a maximum from Sam Imbo.

Bootham B’’ beat a battling Holgate ‘C’ 7-3, with Steve Milner, Gareth Bryning and Nigel Reeson all contributing two wins.

Rachael Greener was unbeaten for Bootham ‘C’ as they defeated Tramways 8-2, but Mike Robinson picked up what could be two vital points for the losers.

Ian Williams was in top form for Shepherds ‘B’ in a 7-3 victory over Bootham ‘D’ while Nathan Taylor was in top form for Shepherds ‘A’ as they defeated York RI ‘D’ by the same margin.
