ENGLAND Under-19s captain Will Rhodes is hopeful an impressive showing in the ICC World Cup can boost his case as he aims to play more cricket for Yorkshire, writes Will Jackson.

Rhodes, who plays for Stamford Bridge, received lots of plaudits for his captaincy in the UAE where his England side exceeded all expectations to finish third in the tournament, beating some of the favourites along the way.

The 19-year-old all-rounder said: “I was quite pleased with my performances but it’s the progress of the team which is most important and pleasing.

“Playing in a World Cup and representing your country is what you dream about and playing against world class players of your age group from all around the world can only help us develop as players.

“I feel I improved in all aspects of my game and I’m really looking forward to getting back to Yorkshire and testing myself on different pitches, which means I’ll have to alter my technique again but it’s great experience to play in such different conditions.

“I’m looking forward to going away to Sri Lanka in a few weeks and having a catch-up with Jason Gillespie and Martyn Moxon.”

However, with Rhodes seemingly in high demand - he has already made nine first team appearances - it is unlikely Stamford Bridge will see much of him this summer. But he certainly retains a close connection to the club.

He said: “I’m still quite involved with the club with my brother Dom being there and hopefully I will be able to play a few games this season if I get a chance.

“I’m really grateful for the help they’ve given me and I feel l owe them something in return.”

Rhodes also had a few words of praise for Yorkshire and England colleague Matthew Fisher, who was one of the stars of the U19s tournament.

“What he did to the India top order in the quarter-final was unbelievable and he showed his potential,” he said.

“He’s definitely one to watch.”

Rhodes will travel with the Yorkshire first team squad to Sri Lanka to prepare ahead of the new season.
