York City boss Nigel Worthington plays down Wes Fletcher transfer talk

York Press: York City top scorer Wes Fletcher York City top scorer Wes Fletcher

YORK City have received no approaches for top scorer Wes Fletcher despite reports of unsubstantiated interest from higher division clubs.

Fletcher has been linked to Sky Bet Championship outfit Doncaster Rovers and League One clubs Preston and MK Dons but City chief Nigel Worthington is in no mood to sell the 22-year-old forward, who is under contract at Bootham Crescent until the summer of 2015.

The former Burnley striker has netted nine times from open play this season with a further four goals coming from the penalty spot.

Commenting on possible transfer talk concerning Fletcher, who has missed the Minstermen’s last two games with a groin problem, Worthington said: “We have had no inquiries at the football club.

“The rumours don’t surprise me really if I’m being honest but, at the minute, he’s doing quite nicely for ourselves, when he’s fit.

“With his contract, he will be a York City player for another 15 months and we want to keep it that way because we are looking to move forward as a club ourselves.

“It would be good for him as well to be here and continues his work and progress. “If he can get more goals this season that can only help him too.”

Hope he's fit for Saturday!

We will know how big the commitment to go for promotion is if all offers for Wes, one of our best players, are turned down. There will undoubtedly be some but if we are ambitious for promotion this is definitely one player we cannot afford to let go. I would be looking to give him a new extended contract at the end of this season if he keeps his form up.

Just ignore the rumours about Wes Fletcher until something positive happens. Sometimes transfer rumours are deliberately leaked to unsettle a player. But everybody has a price if money is offered. City will know what to do when that time comes. Not many Division 2 clubs could afford to refuse silly money.

It's a difficult one. Firstly would Fletcher sign an extended contract knowing he would probably get a better deal from a bigger club when out of contract next summer. Secondly could we actually turn down a big offer for Fletcher this summer knowing we would get nothing a year later if he fails to sign an extension.
My feeling is we will struggle to hold on to him for next season if he continues to improve, and I think he will.
