ACOMB men’s I cemented third place in Yorkshire Hockey League division four north with a 4-1 win at Harrogate III.

The Tangerines started slowly and ’keeper Craig Brown was called upon to make several saves early on. The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute when Sam Lynn’s cross was deflected into the net by a defender.

Harrogate rallied and a forward made a solo run into the area and flicked the ball into the net to level.

Within two minutes of the restart, Lynn’s fierce reverse stick strike rocketed past a static ’keeper.

Ten minutes later Lynn made it 3-1 and completed his hat-trick from close range after some excellent passing between Matt Dickenson and Pete Hilton.

Ryan Forster neatly deflected a Tangerine penalty corner strike for the fourth goal with ten minutes remaining.

In division five north, Acomb II lost 5-0 at home to leaders Bingley Bees I. Bingley led 3-0 at the break and Acomb failed to get on the scoresheet in the second half, despite some short corner chances.

The Bees added two more goals despite valiant defence from Andy Church, Dave Morris and man of the match John Armitage.

In Yorkshire League division two, Acomb ladies I beat City of York III 3-1.

Acomb’s Wendy Watson had a goal disallowed and City of York also had a goal chalked off in the first half, while Tangerines ’keeper Sarah Milburn made an important one-on-one save just before half-time.

Acomb took the lead from a short corner when Watson’s ball was fired goalbound by Kerry Woods and Vicky Wrigley tipped the ball past the ’keeper for her first goal of the season.

Acomb doubled their lead when Jenna Allinson swept the ball into the bottom corner from another set piece.

York pulled a goal back from a free hit which was deflected into the top corner by Kelly Williams, but Allinson sealed the game from another short corner.
