Henry Wharton’s gym holds cash raising contest

Wharton’s cash raising contest YORK’S undisputed king of the boxing ring Henry Wharton has launched a fundraising combination for his Acomb-based gym.
In order to stage the first show at Henry’s Gym scheduled for May, work to a fire escape needs to be done at the York Road premises housed on the first floor of the former Regent Cinema.
But funds are tight as grant aid has yet to come through.
So Wharton and his team have organised a fund-raising event at the gym tomorrow starting at 6pm.
And in a further bid to drum up support and cash aid, York MP Hugh Bayley is to meet former undefeated European, Commonwealth and British super-middleweight champion Wharton at the gym on Monday.
Said Wharton: “For the gym to stage our first show the work needs to be done on the fire escape.
“So it’s a question of trying to attract some revenue while we strive to get some grant assistance.”
Anyone wishing to help can phone Wharton on 07543 636424.
