Sean Bass hopes to lead York RUFC all the way to Twickenham
SEAN BASS wants to lead York RUFC all the way to Twickenham as their Northern Division Intermediate Cup campaign finally gets under way tomorrow.
After two aborted attempts to play at Consett were thwarted by the weather, Medicals come to Clifton Park for a pool two match.
Bass admits his team know little about their Newcastle-based opponents, who are eighth in Durham and Northumberland One.
But he has backed his charges to make a winning start in a competition that sees the final played at the home of English rugby union.
“I would love to take this team there,” he said.
“It’s been a frustrating season for us and nothing would be better than pushing on in this competition.
“We lost in the Shield to Selby and our league form has been up and down. We really want to have a pop at this and represent Yorkshire.”
On Medicals, Bass added: “We’ve got a feeling they are a young side who will look to push the ball around.
“We don’t know a lot about them but they won’t know what to expect from us. Whatever they bring, we have to negate it and show what Yorkshire rugby is.”
Bass believes Rich Downey could be a key component in a York victory, saying: “He has been playing exceptionally well. He is a cracking kid and just gets straight on with it.”
Selby will again attempt to go to Old Brodlieans in Yorkshire One.
Their game in Halifax was called off last week because of the weather and, because the league has priority over the Yorkshire Shield, their planned semi-final with Scarborough has now been pushed back to next month.
The enforced break a week ago means Sam Weller returns to the starting XV after missing two games.
“You get a week off to get a bit of a rest and there were quite a few hanging on by their fingernails so it was quite good for them,” said an optimistic Selby head coach Richard Nicholson of last week’s postponement.
“On the other hand we were starting to build momentum. We can’t do anything about the weather.”
York RI go to Ossett in Yorkshire Four.
