BRAGGING rights were seized by Acomb Hockey Club men’s I when they beat City of York VI 2-0.

The derby victory not only extended the Tangerines’ unbeaten run in 2014, but also ensured they held on to third place in Yorkshire League division four north.

Matt Dickenson bagged both goals for Acomb, though the game was initially controlled by the young York ranks. Unfortunately, York could not find a way through the defence of David Brown, Dave Bell and Pete Hilton.

Midway through the first half a smart run by Sam Lynn involving skipper Baz Whitfield, in an unlikely wing role, teed up an unmarked Dickenson to sweep the ball home from close range.

Within minutes of the restart Acomb doubled their advantage when, from a Whitfield cross, Dickenson neatly deflected the ball past the stranded home ’keeper.

Acomb’s push for more plunder saw Ryan Forster and Lynn thwarted by sound defensive work.

The turmoil deepened for City of York I when they remained anchored to the North League premier division after a 6-2 loss at Leeds Gryphons I confirmed their 15th defeat in 17 starts this term. The other two games have ended in draws.

City of York II returned to winning ways in emphatic style with a 5-1 triumph at fellow Yorkshire League premier division strugglers Leeds Adel.

After soaking up the first couple of attacks, City were up and running when Dan Ellwood drilled in a low shot in the sixth minute.

A reverse stick effort from Rob Newton crept inside a post to double the lead before a third was struck by Pete Perryman after astute approach play from Jonny Kilmartin.

Any worries of an Adel comeback were settled early in the second half when Newton played the ball in for Alex Fletcher, who sublimely nutmegged the ’keeper for the fourth.

City then scored their best goal of the game, when excellent work from Sam Engleman saw him cross perfectly for Pat Herriott to slide in.

Adel bagged a late consolation, but that could not prevent City leapfrogging their hosts on goal difference.

Even more emphatic was the division two triumph enjoyed by City of York III, who routed hosts Ramgarhia 8-1.

The visitors roared into a 5-0 half-time lead through goals from Stu Burke (2), Tim Lister, Alex Herriott and Mark Moisley.

The first strike after the interval fell to Ramgarhia, but they were eventually overwhelmed with further goals from Burke and Herriott (2).

Points were shared in the division three duel between Ben Rhydding IV and City of York IV, who could not believe they went in at half-time a goal down.

York again dominated the bulk of possession after the break but could only muster a leveller from a tight angle by Russell Bowry.

Despite a solid show and fine solo displays from Andy Potts, James Woodhall and Malcolm Cossey, City of York V yielded a goal in each half to lose 2-0 at Halifax II in division four north.

There was no joy in division five north for City of York VII who lost 2-1 at home to York University III, while City of York VIII slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Bradford III in division six north.

After a solid start to each half, York lost their way and turned over possession too easily. A feature was a fine penalty flick save from goalkeeper Mark Burn.

The game involving City of York Badgers was called off due to a lack of numbers.
