ASHLEY HUGILL made a break of 46 as he swept into the second round of the York Masters snooker tournament.

The aspiring professional beat Roland Cox 3-0, but both still qualified from their group for the last 16 of the competition, which aims to find the best player in York.

A 35 break gave Hugill the first frame and a long red in the second helped him on the way to his 40-plus effort.

Cox rallied in frame three and some good safety gave him a 13-point advantage with just pink and black on the table.

But Hugill cleared the colours and won the match on a respotted black.

York RI and Acomb player Tim Lister comfortably progressed through to the second round with a 3-0 victory over South Bank’s Mark Hodson.

Winning the first in a black ball finish, a break of 36 gave the Scruton Cup champion the second frame.

A break of 31 in the third wrapped up the win. Having lost his opening match to Paul Mahoney, Hodson is out of the tournament.

Having lost both their opening matches to Steve Gregson, Keith Thornhill and Mick Borg knew only a win would see one of them go through to the last 16.

Thornhill started the better, potting a number of long reds and he won the opening frame on a black ball.

But Borg hit back to take frame two and a 30 break in frame three gave him a 2-1 lead before he wrapped up the match.
