MAJOR repair work will need to be done if York’s Simon Dyson is not to suffer a second successive early exit from a European Golf Tour event.

Dyson closed the first day of the Africa Open with a one-over par 72 to open a gap of ten shots to the overnight leader, Ricardo Santos of Portugal.

Dyson started promisingly at the East London Club, striking a birdie four on the par-five third hole. But his form dipped with three dropped shots on the par-four sixth, ninth and 11th holes.

Dyson clawed back the deficit after carding a four on the course’s longest hole, the par-five, 531-yard 15th, but finished the round trailing in the final quarter of the 155-strong field.
