THE York & District Ladies Squash League Open Championship gets under way tomorrow.

The preliminary rounds will be played at David Lloyd Sports Club in Hull Road, but the venue for Friday’s final is Dunnington Sports and Social Club.

The 17-strong field is headed by number one seed Nicky Horn, who plays for York Clifton Club.

Seeded two is Natalie Cain, from David Lloyd, with Malton’s Andrea Mayne the third seed and up-and-coming junior Poppie Jaram, of Dunnington, at four.

Cain was beaten in last year’s final by Jess Hunter, while the Plate was won by Sarah Broadhurst, victorious over Linda Craggs in the final.

Tournament co-ordinator Anne Matwijiszyn said: “I am sure we will be in for an excellent entertaining week of squash.”

Round one starts tomorrow at 6.15pm, with round two on Monday, the quarter-finals on Tuesday and semi-finals on Thursday.

Running alongside the Open is the plate competition. Both finals will take place Friday, starting at about 7.30pm.
