Mexborough’s Darren Johnson, who plays on the PDC circuit, hit legs of 19, 15 and 16 darts to brush York’s former PDC tour player Chris Thompson aside in a 4-0 whitewash in the final qualifying stage of the YDP Masters Darts Open.

Johnson defeated Mark Harley 3-1 with two 18-darters and a 17-dart leg in the first semi-final while Thompson hit 17 and 16 ousted Hull’s Arron Holdstock by the same margin in the Streamline Taxis and Red Dragon Darts competition.

The quarter-finals saw Hartley close a 13-dart leg in defeating Tommy Lishmon (Hull) 3-0.

Johnson (16-18-19) won 3-0 against Terry Temple (Whitwell-on-the-Hill); Holdstock beat Lincoln’s Scott Bennett 3-2 with Thompson winning 3-1 over Cleveland’s John Stacey.

Other legs of distinction during the earlier rounds were hit by Matt Padgett 18-18-15-15, Hartley 18-20-20-17, Johnson 21-18-19-15, Holdstock 13-15, Temple 16-18-19-16, Paul Cooper 18-12, Thompson 18-18-16-13-17-16-15-15, Mick Nixon 16-19, Alan Dawson 18-16-19 and Justin Hobson 21-15.

And 18-darters were hit by Jonathan Crosland, Steve Mann and two from John Stacey.

Simon Rimington and Steve Kemp junior hit 17-dart legs.

The highest checkout of the day came from Cooper with 160 with other ton-plus finishes posted by Nick Cass and Holdstock 120, Padgett and Justin Hobson 118, Johnson 102 and Temple 100.

The Grand Finals are at Huntington WMC in York on Saturday, January 25.

All players must register and be in attendance by 1pm for a 1.30pm start.

The format for the Grand Finals is: last 64 best of five legs; last 32 and 16 best of seven legs; quarter-finals best of nine legs; semi-finals best of three legs in best of five sets and the Grand Final the best of three legs, best of seven sets. The overall winner receives £1,000.

Spectators are welcome.

Entries will also be taken for the first qualifying stages of the Blue Bell Hotel Darts Championship which carries a prize fund of more than £5,500.

The first qualifier is on Saturday, February 1 when registration closes at 3pm for 4pm start. The second qualifier is on Sunday, February 2 when registration closes at noon for a 1pm start.
