YORK CITY have taken Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Nick Pope on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old was at Bootham Crescent in November and played two games for the Minstermen before being quickly recalled to The Valley.

But he has been snapped up again by City chief Nigel Worthington and will compete with Michael Ingham for a first team spot.

Decision on first choice keeper will be interesting with this one. Good competition to keep both of them at the top of their game me thinks.

Never got to see this lad in action before he was re-called by Charlton but even Michael Ingham in a recent Radio York interview, described him as "different class". So, can't see him warming the bench for too long! Inghy was himself "different class" against Morecambe, was also very good against Dagenham and about the same against Northampton - but misjudged the cross where Mattie Blair should have scored with a free header. (Mattie must still have thought he was in a blue City away shirt and scoring our second goal last April against The Cobblers, which went "in off" their full-back!!) Believe that Inghy deserves to keep the shirt for the time being but he will definitely need to remain consistent with his current form. Overall, an astute move by the manager.COYR.

Agree Chuck. But I wouldn't have worried if our youth keeper was on the bench he's a useful lad. at least one more to get paid off soon and two more loan players to come in. looking at the balance we look good,

Interesting - Ingham or Pope - Pope or Ingham - personally I would go with Popoe if Ingham is not 100% fit as reported

Goal keepers are there to stop shots, it's what else they do that define's them. If this lad can command his area and kick well i can see him getting the nod.

I have not seen Pope play so shall reserve judgement as yet. Ingham has a very good record at City and has played very well in our recent mini run of success so I guess he will start on Saturday assuming fitness ok? Just out of interest how many times have you actually watched Pope to arrive at your conclusion he should get the nod? I seem to recall a few were getting prematurely carried away with Kettings and Macarey before they were, as it were, "found wanting". .

Ingham as first choice for me. I know sentimentality doesn't have a big part to play in modern football, but he's a loyal and long serving player who has done a lot for us in the past - Pope, I'm sure, is a very good keeper, but at the end of the day he's still a loan player and won't be able to match Inghams commitment to the cause.

This loan move has been on the cards for weeks. Personally I think that Charlton have allowed Pope to return to York City believing that he is going to play. So although I really rate Michael Ingham as a quality goalkeeper, I am expecting him to be on the bench.

I'd pick Ingham not for that reason but for the simple reason he is in form. If his form dips then Pope should be in........simple

Couldn't agree more.

Ingham a loyal pro who is a good shot stopper...but often superglued to his line and does not command his area.

Which is why he never made it at league level. Like many, a great Conference standard player.

Pope is a class act.

With respect Ingham has played roughly around 150 plus matches at FL level in addition to 3 full caps for N. Ireland. I hope Pope is indeed a class act but as I enquiried of another poster how many times have you actually seen him play to arrive at your claim - do you follow Charlton Reserves? Let's wait and see.

I'm not Inghams biggest fan but he should definately start on Sat and its up to him to keep the jersey with consistent performances. Having someone breathing down his neck ready to step in can only be a good thing.

Having not seen Pope play I can't make a judgement on his quality but one things for sure I feel better that we have a keeper on the bench whoever it may be.

Sir Alex says...

Ingham has upped his game this month. The one goal conceded was Ben Davies' fault, so MI should start on Saturday.
I am hoping Rovers are a little tired having been playing two games a week recently. Another win and I will start looking at how far we are off 7th, but will not count my chickens just yet - 52 points is first target.
