Moin Ashraf may have sights set on helping Yorkshire enjoy a successful 2014 season, but has still found time between training to spark a Twitter charity auction for his old kit.

The 22-year-old Bradford-born seamer came up with the idea of raising money for charity when he was clearing out some old kit a few weeks ago.

He immediately thought of Martin House Hospice near Wetherby, which cares for youngsters with serious illness and provides support for their families, having been unable to fulfil a request to visit them before Christmas.

Ashraf decided to put all his 2013 Yorkshire kit and his kit from Yorkshire’s 2012 Champions League campaign up for sale on twitter and has been staggered by the response.

“I was clearing out my stuff and told my mum that my kit for the new season would be arriving soon and she suggested at first that I could give my old stuff to charity,” he explained.

“It was then the idea clicked that I could use Twitter, use it to my advantage and raise some funds for the less fortunate.”

Having met Jane Ferguson, the chief executive of the Hospice, at Yorkshire’s 150th anniversary dinner at the end of last season, Ashraf was hopeful of raising a few hundred pounds to help their cause.

But the campaign has gone so well, he hopes to exceed that significantly.

“Here at Yorkshire we have a really big fan-base, so I thought I could get it out there and try to raise as much money as I could,” he said.

“The initial benchmark I was aiming for was £400 to £500 but I’ve exceeded that and almost doubled it.

“I’ve got five or six more shirts left, a Champions League shirt and a few jumpers left so I’m hoping they will go in the next few days and help us to reach a target of around £1,500 with voluntary donations as well.”

Ashraf was joined at Yorkshire’s training session by York-based Jonny Bairstow, who has just returned from England’s ill-fated Ashes campaign. He is due to fly out with the England Lions squad to tour Sri Lanka at the end of this month.

Yorkshire’s younger players have also received international recognition with four players being named in England’s Under-19 squad for the World Cup in UAE next month.

England will be captained by Stamford Bridge all-rounder Will Rhodes, while Jonathan Tattersall will be vice-captain. They have been joined in the squad by Sheriff Hutton Bridge seamer Matthew Fisher, pictured right, and Josh Shaw, the only member of the quartet yet to make his first-team debut for Yorkshire.
