YORK CITY winger Ashley Chambers has joined Conference side Cambridge United.

The 23-year-old, who has been on the periphery of the first team at Bootham Crescent in recent weeks, signed a deal at the Abbey Stadium that will keep him there until the end of the season, with the option of a further 12 months.

Chambers successfully passed a medical yesterday and will be in contention for Cambridge's FA Trophy game against Luton on Saturday.

He made 140 appearances for York, scoring 23 goals, after joining the Minstermen on loan from Leicester City in November 2010.

He joined City permanently the following summer and will always have legendary status at the club after scoring York's equaliser in the play-off final against Luton at Wembley in May 2012.

A City spokesman said: "We would like to sincerely thank Ashley for his huge contribution to the club, and everyone at York City would like to wish him all the best for the future at his new club Cambridge United as they battle for the Conference title and promotion back to the Football League.

Cambridge United's director of Football, Jez George, told the club's official website: “We are delighted to have signed a player of Ashley’s pedigree and quality.  We have worked really hard to make this happen once we knew that York City were willing to allow him to leave on a free transfer.

"He will be an exciting player for our fans to watch and a really good addition to our squad for the second half of the season and hopefully beyond.”
