North Yorkshire trainer Karl Burke, looking forward to another good season, can strike the right note at Wolverhampton this afternoon with the promising Jaeger Train.

The three-year-old made his debut on this course ten days ago and, clearly expected to prevail, was backed down to 5-4 favourite.

Alas, he found one too good in Three Pips and was beaten by just over a length into second place.

That experience will not have been wasted on Jaeger Train, who steps up a furlong in today’s 32Red Maiden Stakes and is expected to take plenty of beating. Martin Harley has the mount.

Medam is given the task of justifying the nap vote in the opening Ladbrokes Apprentice Handicap.

Trained by Shaun Harris, the mare is capable of winning on the strength of a couple of placed efforts here last month and also a narrow defeat Kempton.

Medam will be partnered by accomplished North Yorkshire rider Shirley Teasdale, who knows her well and can steer the five-year-old to victory on a course where Medam has scored in the past.

Freddie Tylicki has enjoyed a successful spree lately and the former Malton jockey has good prospects on Auden in the Coral Mobile Handicap.

Trained by John Jenkins, the gelding won at Southwell last week to show himself in good heart.

Although he scored only narrowly there, he had moved smoothly into contention and there is every chance he can defy a 6lb penalty.

The in-form Matraash (2.40) and Barbs Princess (4.10), the mount of York-based jockey Robert Winston, are two others to note on the Polytrack circuit.

Southwell’s meeting today is a jumps fixture and hinges on a dawn inspection to ensure the course is free from waterlogging.

The fields have cut up throughout the programme, but Tony McCoy has good prospects of starting the meeting in style aboard Morestead in the Bet toteplacepot Handicap Chase.

The nine-year-old, trained by Brendan Powell, is long overdue another win, having finished second in his last three starts.

This does not look a strong race and Morestead should be hard to beat with the champ in the saddle.

Shouldavboughtgold is another horse looking for a change of luck in the Win Big With totejackpot Novices’ Handicap Chase.

Will Kinsey’s gelding has finished runner-up on his latest two starts and went down by only inches to Clondaw Flicka at Wetherby on Boxing Day.

Donald McCain and Jason Maguire team up with Gulf Punch in the Roulette And Blackjack At totepool.com Casino Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, but the hat-trick seeking seven-year-old may struggle to concede 11lb to Fountains Mary, a winner last month at Taunton.
