York City boss Nigel Worthington hails "blistering pace" of new signing Shaq McDonald

York Press: York City boss Nigel Worthington York City boss Nigel Worthington

YORK City’s new teenage striker Shaq McDonald will be thrust into first-team action as soon as the transfer window reopens.

The released Peterborough forward has agreed terms to join the Minstermen in the New Year and will be involved in City’s home match with Dagenham & Redbridge a week today.

McDonald, 18, had his four-year contract terminated by Posh in November despite a promising start for the League One club’s youth team last season when he netted 11 times in three consecutive games after signing from Chasetown.

He has also been on loan to Histon this season where he scored twice in three outings but another temporary spell with Chester lasted just 24 minutes when he was sent off on his debut as a second-half substitute.

McDonald has been on trial with the Minstermen this month, prompting City chief Nigel Worthington to offer him a deal at Bootham Crescent until the summer.

On his new recruit, Worthington said: “He will go straight into the squad because he has got that blistering pace we want to utilise.

“We had him with us for a few days prior to Christmas to have a look at him, and myself and the chairman have decided to offer him a contract until the end of the season.

“We want to give him a chance because he had shown bits and pieces in training and that’s also allowed him to get used to the environment here and the rest of the players.

“He now needs time to adjust to show what he can do.

“His levels of fitness are decent and we will be getting them up to our levels with Dagenham being the first game he will be available for.”

McDonald was brought to Worthington’s attention by Peterborough director of football Barry Fry, who has nurtured the likes of Stan Collymore in the past.

On his discussions with the former Birmingham and Southend boss, Worthington added: “He’s a young player who came up in a conversation I had with Barry, who rates him very highly.

“Barry has brought a few players through in the past and you tend to listen to somebody like him, so we thought we would give the lad a shot.

“He knows where the goal is and has got real pace and good technique.

“He is strong too for somebody who is 5ft 8in or 5ft 9in and has good awareness.”

City have also reportedly jumped ahead of a queue of teams interested in taking a chance on McDonald with Worthington saying: “There were quite a few clubs interested in him and that’s why we decided to move quickly to make sure we gave ourselves the opportunity to look at him first.”

This looks like a win win situation to me. The lad obviously has talent and, maybe, coming up here will get him away from any bad influences he may have been involved with at Posh allowing him to flourish ( hopefully ) and us to reap the rewards. So,on the plus side if he turns into a star we win and if he does turn out to be trouble we get rid at the end of the season. Either way we have the promise of goals to come from him. Good luck son I hope you are really successful here

Hopefully he can concentrate on being a professional footballer now he has had his fingers burnt, it would be good to get someone in who can get on the end of a through ball as say what you like about Brodie the lad could get onto them & stick them in the net.
Still need a bit more creativity behind the forwards.

Having read up on his background, this lad has obvious talent. He scorer 25 goals in 10 games at under 18 level quite a record, plays on the shoulder of defenders and is very quick. Getting sent off for Chester and Salisbury on loan shows the other side. Hope Worthington can get the lad grounded and concentrating on football and we could have a potentially great player. Just hope he doesn't turn out to be a loose cannon for us. Time will tell but worth a punt till end of season.

I'M COMING OFF THE FENCE. Ringing around, a couple of people who have seen him (Top league Coaches under 21 level) told me the boy is an exceptional player.but he's got to get his head sorted out, he's playing in size 20 boots if his attitude can get sorted out we are on a winner, The club will do that i'm sure , If we cant then he's on the scrap heap and that would be a great pity .

sounds like another problem player who will fade away like so many others who have come to York with promise. Sodje, the lad from Darlington to name 2. We need a more experienced striker, this suggests we are planning for a year or two in the lower leagues, need to show more ambition if we are to stay in this league.

Jarvis worked hard without effect on Boxing Day, but Bowman didn't even have the benefit of hard work. Something he shared with Coulson who failed to make himself available on numerous occasions and also was late coming back to support his fullback. Carson looked the most dangerous and helped Davies before switching to the opposite side. However we never looked like scoring in the second half and allowed an average (I'm being kind) team to dominate.
Around the time of our goal we had a period of mild pressure and from our viewpoint should have had a penalty when their rookie keeper was completely out of position and Oyebanjo was shoved off the ball. The later penalty should have led onto a comfortable match but we failed to show any more quality.
Will a Shaq attack be more dangerous? It cannot be any more toothless but even the best player in the world needs service from the midfield and for whatever reason ours seems constrained from joining in and going beyond the ball - so our forwards are always outnumbered with very few options when they do get on the ball.
It has to be a worry when people are placing great emphasis on players who are not in the team (even given playing evidence) but now there are those who are expecting miracles from an 18 year old? Ravel Morrison moved from MU to WHU with similar fanfares and he took at least 2 months to have an impact. Let's give this lad some time before we rush to judgement. (has he even been to Yorkshire before?)
This move is a low cost throw of the die and is worth a try but I wonder if Chambers will be on his way (if someone will pick up his wages) and what will become of Brobbel - even with a loan vacancy?

Checked him out on Football Manager 14 (using FM as a source for checking up player strengths and weaknesses are usually pretty accurate) and I wasent really impressed by the stats. Ofc, reality is a whole other thing, but atm I dont see Shaq as someone who nets 15-20 times over the coming months. He´s prolly a good talent to nurish for the future, but I see him more like that than someone who will save our league contract. :/

Everton use FM as a scouting tool (to see talent before scouts are sent) so why wouldn't anyone else?

best player at the club is not Carson, he was awful against Bury and is limited in his all round game. The best player is Brobbel, yet NW doesnt play him! Fletcher definitely has potential. Worst players are whitehouse and Montrose.

What's the point of having a pacy young striker (Shaq) if we just knock balls up to him with his back to goal or over his head where he just chases the centre half back towards the oppo goal, which is NW formulaic play at the moment. We need a new Manager NOW.
