11:03am Saturday 21st December 2013 in Sport
Fourteen-year-old James Rule produced a sensational display for Coneysthorpe ‘B’ against their ‘A’ in division one of the York Table Tennis League.
He won in straight sets (14-12, 11-7, 11-4) against York’s number one and the hitherto undefeated Martin Lowe.
Rule also defeated Joel Wright and came agonisingly close to beating Ashley Hodgson, losing only after taking a two-set lead.
His were the only two wins for the ‘B’ team, though, as the ‘A’ team ran out 8-2 winners to lead the table.
Second-placed York RI ‘A’ also won 8-2, against their ‘B’ team, thanks to three wins each for Paul Robertson and Filip Wojtkowiak.
Aidan Ranftler won his three singles matches for Holgate WMC ‘A’ in their 8-2 win over Bootham Conservative Club ‘A’, while Coneysthorpe ‘B’ whitewashed bottom team York RI ‘C’.
Shepherds ‘A’ continue to head division two after beating their ‘D’ team 9-1.
Andy Fletcher and Nathan Taylor were in top form to win their singles matches.
Holgate WMC ‘B’ closed the gap on the leaders to eight points after two wins, 10-0 against Bootham ‘C’ and 8-2 against Shepherds ‘C’. Martin Hood won all of his matches over the two games.
York RI ‘F’ kept their promotion challenge alive in division three with a 7-3 win over Holgate WMC ‘D’, helped by maximums for Dom Ainger and Ivan Guilliatt.
BT ‘A’ had two wins in the week, 6-4 against York RI ‘G’ and 9-1 over Shepherds ‘A’. Howard Broadbent won all of his singles in these matches for BT.
Burnholme ‘B’ took over at the top of division four after a 9-1 thrashing of York RI ‘I’.
Andrew Slezak and Chris McCluskie won all of their singles for the victors.
Tom Lines was the star for Holgate WMC ‘E’ in their narrow 6-4 win over York RI ‘J’, who had earlier beaten York RI ‘I’ 9-1, thanks to maximums from Mikey Arnold and Dave Smith.
Russ Barton and Jason Chinnian led the way for Bootham CC ‘G’ as they trounced Crescent WMC ‘F’ 8-2.
