Fourteen-year-old James Rule produced a sensational display for Coneysthorpe ‘B’ against their ‘A’ in division one of the York Table Tennis League.

He won in straight sets (14-12, 11-7, 11-4) against York’s number one and the hitherto undefeated Martin Lowe.

Rule also defeated Joel Wright and came agonisingly close to beating Ashley Hodgson, losing only after taking a two-set lead.

His were the only two wins for the ‘B’ team, though, as the ‘A’ team ran out 8-2 winners to lead the table.

Second-placed York RI ‘A’ also won 8-2, against their ‘B’ team, thanks to three wins each for Paul Robertson and Filip Wojtkowiak.

Aidan Ranftler won his three singles matches for Holgate WMC ‘A’ in their 8-2 win over Bootham Conservative Club ‘A’, while Coneysthorpe ‘B’ whitewashed bottom team York RI ‘C’.

York RI ‘F’ kept their promotion challenge alive in division three with a 7-3 win over Holgate WMC ‘D’, helped by maximums for Dom Ainger and Ivan Guilliatt.
