YORK Indoor Bowls Club remain on track for the North East Ladies League title as they beat Hornsea 78-71, winning three rinks and picking up eight points.

At home, Irene Paylor’s team got off to a good start, leading 13-1 after six ends.

However, by the 16th end, their lead had been cut to three shots with the score standing at 17-14. Thereafter only singles were scored and the home side won 20-16.

Sheila Turpin’s team were 6-5 down after seven ends before winning all but one of the next seven ends as they took control to lead 17-7.

They dropped five shots on the last three ends, but had already done enough to win as the game finished 21-15.

In Hornsea, Barbara Dawson’s side picked up three winning ends, including a seven on the 16th end, to come from 14-11 down to lead 22-14 en route to a superb 23-19 victory.

Pat Bracken’s side were 17-7 down with six ends to play and came back to 17-14 before dropping two twos on the last couple of ends to lose 21-14.

Meanwhile, York ladies progressed in the Mason Trophy at the expense of Huddersfield thanks to a 49-46 aggregate win.

At home, Linda Harrison’s team got off to a good start, leading 18-2 after nine ends.

They then won seven successive ends, which yielded 15 shots to make the score 33-7.

The game was brought to an early finish with two ends to play.

Carol Instone’s away rink led 9-8 after 11 ends but could only win two more and lost 22-13.

York now play the winners of the tie between North Cave ‘B’ and Scarborough.

• Yorkshire kept their hopes of reaching the EIBA Over-60s Liberty Trophy final for the second year running when they easily beat Cumbria 133-80.

The Cumbrians waved the white flag with some games having played 16 of the 21 ends.

Yorkshire play Lincolnshire in the quarter-finals on January 30.
