YORK City centre-back Keith Lowe believes the club are in a “false position” going into Saturday’s home match with top-of-the-table Oxford.

The Minstermen currently lie 20th in the League Two standings only two points ahead of bottom side Torquay.

But Lowe, who is on loan at Bootham Crescent from Cheltenham, believes the Minstermen should have had greater reward for their efforts during his first four outings for the club.

Draws against Burton, Rochdale and Morecambe have followed an unlucky 2-1 defeat at Southend and, as he still waits for his first victory in City colours, Lowe reasoned: “We have played well in all of the last four matches and we have deserved more from the games but you have to look at the bright side.

“We could be losing and drawing and not playing well. Things will turn and happen for us and we will get that win and, hopefully, push on.

“I am really excited to be honest and have been since day one about the players we have got here.

“I believe we are in a false position at the moment and I really think that if anybody was to come and watch us and see our performances and how hard we are working for each other and the gaffer people would agree with me.”

With this weekend’s clash against Oxford representing the ninth game City will have played against top ten teams in 12 fixtures, Lowe also believes encouragement should be taken from the knowledge that the club have only tasted defeat in two of those matches against Fleetwood and Newport.

He said: “Oxford are top and we seem to be playing everybody at that end of the table at the moment, which is good because we are putting in some good performances.

“It’s another tough match but we will have to dig in again and know we will have the crowd behind us so, hopefully, we can come away with three points.”

Lowe is hoping, meanwhile, for better weather conditions against the league leaders after contending with strong winds at the Pirelli Stadium.

On that display, he added: “Not a lot of teams will go to Burton and get a point, never mind come close to holding on for three points. It was a tough game and the conditions did not help the quality of football played.

“When the ball was in the air, with the wind swirling around, it was difficult to judge. You also got a lot of bouncing balls which you don’t usually want, especially as a defender.

“It basically came down to which team coped with that best and I thought both teams did quite well to be honest.”

Since Lowe has been paired with David McGurk in the centre of defence, the team have conceded only two goals in four fixtures.

With Lowe only two short of 300 senior games and McGurk now 16th on City’s all-time appearance list with 324, it is not a partnership that lacks pedigree.

“Between the two of us, there’s experience there,” City’s newest centre back admitted. “I feel comfortable and it seems like we’ve slotted together and have got a good relationship.”

Lowe has also been impressed with a City player, who arrived at Bootham Crescent with just three professional matches under his belt.

On-loan Preston left-back Ben Davies has started more league games – 19 – than any other player at the club this term and Lowe is predicting a bright future for the 18-year-old Lillywhite, saying: “Ben’s going to be a great player and I think he can go on to have a really great career.

“He’s got everything. He’s got an old head on young shoulders, and good technique and know-how.”
